Sydney psych rockers Black Lakes have released Trick Hotel, the second installment of their two-part EP release, with part one Only for the Woods released back in September. Written and recorded during the same sessions, Trick Hotel is both a natural progression and extension of the band’s existing sound.

The EP opens with the delightful “Spit Shine Shoes”, a slow burn rocker, with some great swirling guitars and striking harmonies. A great choice of opener, it grabs your attention right from the intro and never really lets go.

“This Is What It Sounds Like”, the EP's second track, is perhaps my favourite of the whole collection, beautiful and plaintive vocals combine with delicate guitar work to create a wonderful song with a great folky vibe.

“When Will We Know” ups the pace a little once again with some catchy guitar and percussion, juxtaposing nicely with the more restrained atmospheric vocals of Stephen Kelly.

The band begins the build up to the title track “Trick Hotel”, with the aptly named “Entry to Trick Hotel” an atmospheric and ominous epilogue that successfully builds up anticipation. A very close second for my favourite track, “Trick Hotel” is a brilliant track, confident and assured, it is a succinct and engaging look at the band’s direction and a great showing of their many strengths.

Closing out the EP is a reprise of "HBDP", the opening track from their first release, providing the link between the two releases and bringing a close to a cohesive and enjoyable collection of songs. It’s clear the band are confident and clear in their direction and I for one certainly hope to hear more from the band in the future.

Review Score: 7.8 out of 10
